Frequently asked questions
- Is locking money for ten years wise?
- Ten years is very long. You are protected if rates fall, but if rates rise you are stuck with the old one. Only lock money you will certainly not need in that time, and consider placing part of it for a shorter term.
- Can I withdraw early?
- Usually not, or only for a substantial fee. Some banks allow it for special events, such as buying a home. Each deposit states what the bank allows.
- Does the interest count towards the deposit guarantee?
- Yes. A lot of interest accrues in ten years: at 3%, €80,000 grows to over €107,000 if the interest is credited. For large amounts, keep the limit of €100,000 per bank in mind.
