For money with a purpose in the short term: a tax bill, a renovation or a purchase in half a year. You know in advance exactly what you will receive.
Is six months fixed better than a promotional rate?
That depends on the rate after the promotion. A promotional rate often lasts three to six months and then drops; with a deposit the rate is fixed for the whole term. The effective annual rate in the comparison works both through.
Can I reach my money earlier?
With most deposits you cannot, or only for a fee. Each deposit states whether early withdrawal is possible.
6-month deposit
Deposits of exactly 6 months: half a year of certainty about your rate, without locking your money away for long.
Effective annual rateThe effective annual rate for your amount: what you really earn per year, after fees and with compound interest. Below it the rate the bank advertises; with a promotion that only applies temporarily.

A few European countries withhold tax on the interest you receive there. Per country: what is withheld, which form lowers it, and when the higher rate is still worth it.
Banks attract new customers with a high rate that drops back after a few months. A worked example shows when such a promotion really earns you more, and when a lower steady rate wins.
The highest savings rates often come from banks in Sweden, Estonia or Malta. What the European deposit guarantee covers, who pays out if things go wrong, and what you need to watch yourself.
