Why isn't the account with the highest rate always at the top?

We sort by what your amount really earns in a year. A high promotional rate that drops after three months, or a rate that only applies up to a maximum balance, often earns less than a slightly lower lasting rate. The effective annual rate next to each account shows that difference.

Is my money just as safe at a foreign bank?

Within the EU the same statutory deposit guarantee of €100,000 per person per bank applies. We only show banks whose participation in such a scheme we have checked, and every account states which country pays out the guarantee.

How often do savings rates change?

Variable rates can change at any time, often shortly after an ECB rate decision. Every change we see is listed on the Rate changes page.
